Europeana DSI-3

Europeana is Europe's digital platform for cultural heritage, providing free online access to over 53 million digitised items drawn from Europe's museums, archives, libraries and galleries. Europeana's mission is to build on Europe's rich heritage and make it easier for people to use, whether for work, for learning or just for fun.

European Schoolnet's task in Europeana DSI-3 is to continue the work started in the DSI-2 validation pilot of reaching educators and mainstreaming the use of Europeana Collections. This is done by: first, organizing a Developer Group of teachers (18 teachers) who are producing a set of resources and learning activities for students and open source, professional development materials for teachers based on the Europeana Collections. Secondly, testing the resources with the help of a User Group of teachers (60 teachers) who will provide feedback and, finally improving the resources in order to feed into a five module MOOC for teachers, to take place from 30th April to 13th June, 2018.

The Europeana Developer Group of teachers

18 teachers from Finland, France, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain who cover a range of disciplines and curriculum topics joined the Europeana DSI-3 project (September 2017 – August 2018) in order to produce a set of resources and learning activities for students, and open source, professional development materials for teachers based on the Europeana Collections. The teachers also participate in three workshops in the Future Classroom Lab in Brussels: the first on 27th-29th October, the second on 8th-10th December 2017 and the third on 13th-15th April 2018.

During the first workshop, the Developer Group of teachers received detailed introduction into the Europeana resources for educators. In particular, they learned how to improve their searches in Europeana Collections and use the thematic collections, galleries and exhibitions.

The workshop also presented them a variety of digital learning resources available on Europeana Professionals (Historiana, LRE, Inventing Europe, Art Faces, among others) as well as guidelines for using openly licensed content.

More information and pictures from the workshops are available on Europeana's blog, and on European Schoolnet's Flickr page here and here!

They also collaborated to produce the "Europeana in your classroom: building 21st-century competences with digital cultural heritage" MOOC", which will offer a selection of tested, classroom activities and resources to empower primary and secondary teachers in introducing cultural heritage in the classroom and help them reflect on their own practices.

The Europeana Education User Group

The DSI3 User Group of Teachers is a community of 60 teachers from across Europe who implement datasets, pedagogical scenarios and learning activities created by the Developer Group and provide feedback and evaluation data on the Europeana scenarios, learning activities, professional development resources, and the MOOC produced in the Europeana DSI-3 project.

The Europeana DSI-3 MOOC

The "Europeana in your classroom: building 21st-century competences with digital cultural heritage" MOOC is meant to enhance primary and secondary school teachers' and teacher trainers' cultural competences and practices from Europe and beyond. Other stakeholders like museums, cultural centres, etc., can also follow the course.

The MOOC will serve to introduce participants to the Europeana platform, where they will find different resources for educators, such as pictures, videos, texts and various tools that they can easily integrate in their lessons. Moreover, the MOOC will serve to help teachers to build learning scenarios using digital cultural heritage, in a framework of 21st century skills.

More details about the MOOC and registration can be found here.
