Toolset 2 – Future Classroom Maturity Modelling

The Future Classroom Maturity Model is a self-review tool that enables schools to assess their current level of maturity in how effectively ICT is being used in support of learning and teaching.

The Maturity Model has five progressive stages. As a school moves from one stage to the next, the maturity of the school, in its ability to be innovative in learning and teaching supported by technology, increases. Future Classroom Scenarios are used to create a vision of learning and teaching that moves a school to higher levels of Future Classroom Maturity.

The starting point for the scenario development process is to self-assess the school's current use of ICT and its position in the maturity model. There are two ways to use the maturity model either as a self-review exercise in a school or during a Future Classroom Scenario workshop. The main purpose is to identify what a school needs to do to increase its level of Future Classroom Maturity. 

School self-review

Using the online tool (Tool 2.1), a teacher or school leader can assess the level of maturity of their school by answering the questions presented. The questions cover five areas, called dimensions, concerned with learning and teaching. Once completed, the tool gives an indication of the level of maturity overall, and for each dimension. This is compared to national and international averages. More importantly, a report is generated identifying what should be included in a Future Classroom Scenario to help a school move to the next level of maturity.

Future Classroom Scenario workshop

Tool 2.1, the interactive Future Classroom Maturity Model can be used either before or during a Scenario Development Workshop, by members of the Core Group. The report produced can then be used to write a scenario.

As a quicker and simpler alternative, Tool 2.2, a reference guide to the Future Classroom Maturity Model, can be used by the Core Group to discuss the five levels of innovation maturity should be discussed, so that there is a collective understanding and agreement on what level of maturity the school is currently at. This activity could also be completed by small groups of other stakeholders such as teachers and learners.

The aim of the activity is to identify what a school has to include in its Future Classroom Scenario to reach the next level of maturity. It's advisable not to try and jump levels as the degree of change required may be unrealistic.
