Our new ADVAN-CED Lab (Artificial Digital Virtual Augmented Networked Center for Elaboration of Data) is a school-based learning lab built with the aim to offer all the specialized courses at the Buonarroti Technical Technological Institute an advanced learning environment where to experiment new teaching methodologies and offer a dynamic and flexible learning space with emerging devices corresponding to the keywords: Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Digital Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Data Science.
These technologies, particularly powerful and in rapid development, are transversal to different professions and are of strong interest for all our outgoing profiles, not only IT, mechatronics, energy, electrotechnical, but also chemists, biotechnologists, construction and environment. Moreover, the innovative teaching facilitated by the lab setting incorporates 21st Century Skills, equally crucial for our profiles.
The technology-enhanced learning is supported by augmented and virtual reality headsets, robotic apparatuses, processing systems suitable for executing Artificial Intelligence and Data Science applications, together with PCs, laptops, Chromebooks, interactive touch screens and a wide projection screen. Most of this equipment is available ‘on wheels’ to be moved not only inside the lab but also outside it, in order to obtain a ‘diffused lab’ which can extend its technological features outside its walls.
This laboratory also offers a physical place to conduct multidisciplinary and collaborative experiences favored by the different tools and working areas of the lab. The same tools and areas can also be exploited to provide personalized learning based on individual needs, even unwind moments to be spent on the sofa.
The lab moreover hosts the school stakeholders for workshops or meetings: teachers, also from other schools, school leaders, partners participating in our initiatives for training, discussion, practice and reflection. The openness of the lab is also represented by the window which has been opened to the inside of the school, so that personnel passing by the corridor can overview the ongoing activities and be inspired by them.
Important keywords of the new laboratory are innovative and integrated; the goal, in fact, is to enhance the combination of innovative tools strengthening the integration of disciplinary and transversal skills and facilitating the networking of different users, subjects, purposes.
