FCLab: Transforming Education at the Teacher Training School of the University of Eastern Finland
Two Schools, Three Locations in the City of Joensuu
The University of Eastern Finland Teacher Training School comprises two institutions: Rantakylä Teacher Training School and Tulliportti Teacher Training School. Let’s explore their unique features:
1. Rantakylä Teacher Training School:
- Offers comprehensive basic education for grades 1-9.
- Recognised as an Apple Distinguished School.
- Emphasies team teaching and digital learning.
- Creates a supportive and inclusive learning environment for approximately 400 students aged 7-15.
- Operates in open and flexible learning hubs with combined classes.
- Breaks down traditional barriers to encourage active learning, collaboration, and flexibility.
2. Tulliportti Teacher Training School:
Operates in two distinct units:
Primary school grades 1-6 (located in Länsikatu).
Lower secondary grades 7-9 and upper secondary school (in Tulliportinkatu).
The entire school embraces the concept of the “School of the Future”:

FCLabs learning zones inspire the design of each hub and the whole of the school.
Ongoing research focuses for example on technology to support self-regulated learning (including learning analytics) in collaboration with the university.
