At the University of Lapland Teacher Training School, we create, experiment, and develop a learning environment that takes into account the zones of learning. We utilise digital pedagogy to create this environment in the schoolyard and nearby surroundings. Since autumn 2022, we have been gaining experience in purposeful outdoor learning through mentoring activities for 2nd and 6th graders. The schoolyard and nearby environment serve as the primary learning environment.
For us, outdoor learning practically means relocating classroom activities outdoors on a regular basis. Despite varying conditions and factors, we have consistently spent time outdoors each week. The main goal of our activities has been to build a relationship with nature and the environment through hands-on experiences. We learn in nature, about nature, and alongside nature. It is important for us to be involved and interact with what and how things are done in the environment. Outdoor learning allows us to integrate teaching and explore real-world themes as comprehensive units. Out there, phenomena truly exist. Outdoor learning, combined with digital pedagogy, enables variety of teaching methods that bring joy and a sense of accomplishment to the learning process. While reducing barriers to learning, various digital tools support environmental observation, documentation, learning-to-learn skills and a sense of belonging to a group.
