The Future Classroom Lab (FCL) at the Kavaklık Science and Art Center is an innovative learning environment designed to foster the development of 21st-century skills. It caters to both students and teachers of various age groups and focuses on providing activities that enhance a wide range of abilities through technology-driven projects.
The primary audience consists of students aged 7 to 19, particularly gifted students enrolled at the Science and Art Center (BILSEM). These students engage in workshops that cover a variety of subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Information Technologies, English, and Visual Arts. They also participate in significant projects like TÜBİTAK and eTwinning. Besides students, the center supports teachers, including subject teachers and educators seeking to improve their skills in using technological tools and adopting project-based learning approaches.
The FCL offers a wide array of activities that promote active learning. Research activities include virtual tours using VR headsets, prototype development with 3D printers, and conducting online data analysis. Collaboration and group work are encouraged through robotics projects using modular desks and interdisciplinary teamwork. Students also collaborate on coding projects using Arduino and Raspberry Pi, and engage in strategic thinking through games that enhance problem-solving abilities.
The CREATE ZONE offers students the opportunity to design both physical and digital products using advanced technologies such as 3D printers, Chroma Key (green screen) technology, and video editing software. Students also develop their presentation and communication skills by showcasing their projects in presentation areas with the aid of projectors and sound systems. Free activities outside class hours include individual research, project preparation, and creative exploration in visual arts.
For teachers, the FCL organizes workshops to develop their digital teaching skills. These workshops cover Web 2.0 tools, 3D printers, and VR technologies to enrich their lessons. Teachers also receive guidance on how to effectively integrate these tools into their teaching methods, which enhances classroom experiences.
The FCL’s technology is grouped into specific zones, each designed to support different learning activities. In the INVESTIGATE ZONE, students use computers, tablets, and digital resources to conduct research and prototype designs. The EXCHANGE ZONE promotes group work, supported by modular chairs, robotics kits, and VR simulations. The DEVELOP ZONE fosters creativity through coding kits, robotics, 3D design software, and strategy games. The INTERACT ZONE supports interactive learning with smart boards, bookshelves, and educational kits. Finally, in the PRESENT ZONE, students develop their presentation skills using projectors and sound systems.
These technologies, integrated in an interdisciplinary approach, help develop skills in research, production, communication, and digital literacy.
