The Minecraft Learning Lab was established in our school 4 years ago. Our aim was to create an attractive space with a splash of Minecraft to intrinsically motivate students of the first year of secondary education. The field of studies of our students (approx. 30) focuses on "business" or "Steam+". Our mission is to help our students reach basic educational goals so that they have good preparation for the second grade. Our target group is students who require extra support for the core syllabus (Dutch, French and Mathematics) as 90% of our students have some type of learning or social disadvantage, ranging from language delays, learning difficulties and/or disorders to low-income households.
In the Minecraft Learning Lab, we have been working on 5 ambitious goals: parental participation, respectful communication, social engagement, becoming comprehensive readers and ambitious learners.
We are using the 6 learning zones from FCL and we are working on improving the way we can use such areas to reach our goal with our students. We are very open to inputs and collaboration with other labs. Our Minecraft Learning Lab is open to be a testcase, and maybe become in the future an example of a Learning Lab dedicated to kids with special needs.
